Ancestors

Ancestors

Voorouders, jagers worden nu dood-
gezwegen, achtduizend jaren later.
Zij durfden niet de donkerte in.
Dicht bij het daglicht zochten ze
een onderkomen. Wat had de mens
toen nodig? Ach, wat voorraadruimten,
stookplaatsen, water. Vrijwel niets.
Ze paarden en bedachten hun vrouwen
met sieraden: stukjes rode oker en
doorboorde schelpen voor de snoeren
om hun hals. Let op en luister naar
de gids. En sta in godsnaam niet
de hele tijd dat meisje te beloeren.

We keep quiet about our ancestors,
hunters, eight thousand years on.
They did not dare enter the dark.
Close to daylight was where they
sought shelter. What did humans
need then? A little storage space,
hearths, water. Nothing really.
They mated and gave their women
presents of jewellery: pieces of red ochre
and pierced shells for their
necklaces. Pay attention and listen to
the guide. And for heaven’s sake stop
looking at that girl on the sly all the time.

JORIS IVEN
