We can call this inner gold "real self-knowledge": truths you know about yourself, for yourself and from yourself through your self-study. It's yours because you've visited the world where this new kind of gold exists; you've mined it yourself, and you've put it in your pocket. This gold can never be taken from you. Its goodness is yours forever. This new inner wealth enriches you by transforming your very own ideas about who you are and what you really want from life. With it, everything gets simpler. And the nicest thing about this special spiritual gold is that you can have as much of it as you're willing to pay for.
Guy Finley

it’s a special kind of gold
I tell him, my eldest brother
the one who proudly takes on
the responsibility of the first born
stability he believes in
30 yrs later still living in the same town
has the same wife, house, and job
though the pets have changed
and some of the furniture he doesn’t
find comfort in change
lives on my perceived side
of the empty glass
doesn’t get into poetry or jazz
I believe it is his place to be the skeptic,
complainer, and pessimistic
I’ve given up trying to change him
I’ve abandoned the ideal of being him
he shakes his head and scolds at times
his baby sister this heart of mine
his opposite pole most of the time
knowing I am scattered more like the wind
flying around on my own whims
finding the joy wherever I am
playing with my life like toys
he envies me he confessed
to create, destroy,
then recreate…lifetimes
and lifestyles of projects,
all of my explorations and experience,
the optimistic side of the glass
I envy his closeness to family
his traditions and roots
of belonging to something
security of familiarity
in my hometown
I still need a map
we adore each other however
finding that line of respect to the other
galactic worlds each being themselves
earning the grace from our DNA
that keeps the balance between us
integration of both dark and light
into a blend of the day and night

A bit of give, a bit of take
It's a bit sad, but understanding takes you to another level.

I could read you all day.

A a blessing to have such peace of heart and enlightenment of understanding within your family, Debby. It is ongoing torment, like a thorn in the flesh, to be continually roughing-up against ongoing conflict that is constantly being exacerbated although it might be politely controlled. People can only be themselves. Where we can't choose whether or not to be "close", we endeavour to delight in those differences we can celebrate together, and pass lightly over those we can't. Love your recipe for harmony here. This is the treasure that increases and bears much fruit. TY Kate xx

Opposites can fulfill and complete one another, Debby. Thank you for sharing this. It made me think about my six siblings and how we are different and yet similar in some ways. Love and peace to you,

it's kind of funny you wrote this Debbie, I was thinking about the same thing about 3 days. What I know about me that gives me my strengths. And what I don't like about me that I have the power to deal with postively and not let it bother me. Lets face it the good things are easy to digest, what makes the person is how he handles the negative things, it becomes a measure in ones humanity. Also how we deal with others negativity against us. My wife and I face our families and love them anyway, we don't try to hurt anyone but we keep our distance from the problem haters and wish them well. Super poetry

Great write, well written and a gteat husband and I are total opposites, it takes much compromising for both of us. We don't see eye to eye on many things...I always said we were a healthy mix...a mix that has stood many tests that life throws at us...enjoyed this much my friend!

I think if we were all identical beings, even family siblings, this world would truly be a very boring place.

Such sibling comparisons often find two at opposite sides of so many life spectrums, but as this marvellous poem testifies, one spectrum they come together in is usually the love of brother and sister. Well done Deb.
