Sympathy and Crowns Do Not Mix

Sympathy and Crowns Do Not Mix

And if I fed you my fist,

Would you still hunger

For the humility of others

Gorging yourself on

Condescending moments

And a rank, steady diet

Of callous remarks

If I blackened your eyes

Could you still see

The light that encompasses

You in that holier-than-thou

Cocoon, or the brilliant

Spotlight you shine on others

To point out their ineptitude

If I knocked you over the head

Would you still itch to wear

That crown and call yourself sire

Of a land where you were

Once known as pauper

You were serf to another,

Tilling the soil, planting vitality,

And waiting for it to flourish,

Only to give it away by

The basketful on bended knee

Now you sit, high and mighty,

Surrounded by gold, watching

Others shoulder the weight

Of that same responsibility

God help them if their

Baskets are too light!

For your iron fist

Tastes like bitter hypocrisy

And it truly will

Blacken eyes and knock heads

What do you care?

Sympathy and crowns

Do not mix

A very effective lesson that is so coherent and convincing.
Skillfully written indeed.

Whoa! Sheila, this sounds way too familiar!
Yikes, hope that's not coming from something I could of felt or written - meaning you saw into it just a bit further, whatever it was - or who - it left a black mark on your pen/pad and heart, to write and be inspired by it!
GREAT Poem and Fine Honest Heart spoken!

Sheila, I know of whom you speak -- and I could not agree with your analysis more -- to give an analogy of such artistic creation to this very difficult subject shows the depth of your talents -- emote more often, it spices up your poetry quite nicely --peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

What a horrid picture of one in a high position who is revealed for the pharisaic leader he is. Your criticism should hit him between the eyes!
But there is God, who can turn the heart of a king, and He is ultimately in control of the affairs of men.

I'm seem to be following John in my reviewing this evening, and I could never express myself quite as eloquently as he, but the intensity in this piece is extraordinary and, I agree, rather different from your usual style ... but it is strong, powerful, and I think can apply to more than one situation, for many wear the crown are all too keen to judge and belittle. This one leaves your reader thoughtful. Great write, my friend! ~Hugs, Elizabeth

Sheila,
Not a side of you I've seen or read before but I like it, the passion and intensity, the sheer conviction, the outrage, you pour it out and on. Excellent!

This is a wonderful voice of enough is enough!
Governments? Religion?...oh yes I most definitely absolutely agree with Richard, but even those callous people we meet in our lives along our journeys way who can throw out servings of their self proclaimed superiority...yet do not like or understand being served a reality check of just desserts...This is a very wonderful release to share a realization they are not superior...I thoroughly enjoyed reading this Shelia!

The poetess wielding the sword/quill effectively, and from the heart!
My take!

I too am beyond disillusioned with our present government, and also with the unilluminated, phony, deceptive form of Christianity that masquerades on the TV and in the mainstream. The insincerity, the lies, the skullduggery, the elitism, the arrogance, the lightless, wisdomless propagation of what was once truth sadly taken out of context and butchered.

Your poem, - and (in my humble opinion) it's pertinence in context to all the illusionists and manipulators in government and also in mainstream religion - reminded me of something that Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote. Below is my loose remembrance of it:

"Considering that the best things in life are often the nearest: the breath in your nostrils, the light in your eyes, flowers at your feet, duties at your hand, the path of Light and Truth just before you, then do not grasp at the stars, but do life's unornamented work as it comes, certain that the daily duties you've been given and your daily bread are the sweetest things of life."

Blessings ...

This one is one of your strongest writes to date, I love the way you allow the reader to interpret and place the crown where they see it, for me on the sanctimonious heads of those Sunday morning Christians who turn a blind eye once they leave the comfort of their air condidtioned palaces of faith.

Shelia, this is a strong write, but I'm left in the dark not knowing who wears the crown; although it definitely has a political bent. Makes a lot of sense, too.
