A Town Mourns Meg Moore

Another October offering. I enjoyed playing with the rhyme scheme in this one - having it not so perfect. Of course Meg Moore is a fictional character, but I saw this poem in my mind vividly.

A Town Mourns Meg Moore

In the blackest night,

Beneath a waning moon,

A young girl took flight

When faced with her doom

His gloves were leather

His breath, rank and raw

Their shadows together

No witnesses saw

His work was precise

His conscience never swayed

Nerves taut in a vice

As his victim prayed

Now, ten years later

Her spirit is trapped;

Invisible skater

On her farewell lap

Then dusty terrain,

Worn by weather’s kiss,

Exposed the remains;

Bones left to darkness

He’d left no symbols,

Nor a nom de plume

Just a tortured soul

For police to exhume

I like to imagine

She called through the sand

Left words to the wind,

Cupped by destiny’s hand

A family told

They waited so long

Time lost in the fold,

Crying misery’s song

Mystery revealed,

Though no killer caught

Makes it harder to heal

When closure is sought

A slab of cold stone

Letters etched in time

Sinks a heavy tone

When none have claimed the crime

A wood mantle shrine

Memories must do

In the back of the mind

A suspicion or two

Neighbors take notice

Is it the guy next door?

What did police miss?

What happened to Meg Moore?

Isn’t he shady?

Spends his time alone

Eyes all the ladies,

Snaps shots with his phone

And that guy in line

Keeps looking your way

You watch your behind

Till he’s gone and paid

A shadow follows,

Invading your heart

Burrowed in the hollows

Ripping them apart

Justice never came;

A flame extinguished

You honored her name

And wished your last wish

You tortured yourself -

Imagined that monster

With trophies on his shelf;

The warped photographer

Pictured him with wild eyes

And drool down his chin

Attached to his lies,

Wearing an angel’s skin

But the truth be told

Behind a solid door

Past a trail run cold

Hides he…who killed Meg Moore

May she rest in peace.

At first I wondered if I was going to like the subject you chose, but then I enjoyed the story-telling. I agree with Kate and I really like the fact that it reads like a ballad. Very well written.

Brilliant. Sheila at her best. Creepy, leaving one with an uneasy feeling to looking behind as goose flesh crawls up my back and turn into a shiver. Spooky. Love it. Liz

Sheila,
The Meg Moores of the world are the victims of cruelty and crime and of the indifference of society...and the search for closure goes on as much for our sakes as for the victim's. This is grim but not dark fantasy, your steady lines and steady head keep it real and meaningful.
Kate's right, you excel in this genre.

MY GOOODNESS... THIS IS EXCELLENT... Sheila, you excel in this genre, and with such effortless rhyme. This form is perfect for your material - a lament and ballad all in one. I salute you for this... I'm not that partial to "dark" writes as such, but this is like a documentary which is living, rather than ghoulish for the sake of it. Again, kudos! :)) xx

Dear Poetess! I really enjoyed reading this October offering, and it’s wonderful flow… & also I enjoyed my own recollections to men I have known who tried to wear “angels skin” (oh hummm……) little do they know our perceptions are much deeper than their waning deliveries of conception…poor poor Meg Moore though…she fell for his trap, where some of us just like to play….

You had me hanging on every word in this one Meg er ah I mean Shiela, it was like you became this young girl and told the story through her eyes and voice. You captured the way a person, a family or a community react to such violent unnatural acts. Great write and definately submittable.
