Posies

An elderly couple; enjoying their walk
Stop at a lamp shop- they whispered and talked

With so little strength- he opened the door
Ever the gentleman for the love he adores

They wave to each other with promise in their eyes
That she wouldn’t be long and he’d wait outside

He walked to a flower cart- picks posies then pays
He smiles and admires the beautiful array

He sits on a bench and from each little bloom
The air carried the light scent of the posies perfume

His eyes start to close- a smile softens his face
He’s dreaming of her and her beauty and grace

A tap jars him lightly- he wakes then he stands
And gives his love posies and kisses her hands

I have always had the greatest admiration for old love. While our society glorifies youth and the flush of romance, it is that which lasts , time tested, overcoming hurdles and obstacles, surviving the shadows we all have, that deserves the greatest respect. And a bunch of posies.

This is an outstanding, masterful piece along with the art. While teaching I often took my students to Telfair Art Gallery and had them explain the paintings there. It's quiet interesting what they convey. Your poem is testimony to long lived love and done so very gently.

I'm with Eileen, Marilyn... I could feel a physical reaction, warm, the kind of piece that brings a sigh. The writing is pure magic, the story, so moving. This is the one that will rise to the top after reading many. Beautiful. katy xox.
