In a technical sense, it is not the flames. You could be gazing at anything and see what you saw; clouds, rustling leafs or a plastered wall. The unfocussing allows you to see the whole instead of the fragment. Our eyes have been conditioned to observe in ways that make us believe we see more, while in fact we see less. So in a more meaningful sense you saw those flames indeed.
