Flame Against Flame

A million times I’ve stared into a candle’s flame
looking for images of happiness and freedom.

I’d watch the flame bounce from side to side, up and down
playing with the air.

Suddenly, I saw you, I saw me, and I saw us swaying in the flame
and as you searched my eyes, I saw your warming heat lick at my core.

It breathed for me and I saw myself being unburdened.

It took over my motions and I saw my quiet stillness.

It took my mind and I watched my anxieties vanish.

Then, I saw myself being spun all around.

It dipped me
and lifted me high then gently threw me
into your arms.

I didn’t see or feel fear-
I knew you’d catch me

Such a beautiful moment-

Your warming heat was such a special gift
that I accepted willingly
because it unleashed the flames inside of me-
to be me-
and to live me
and burn with you-
wild and free in an exciting dance…

Flame against flame

In a technical sense, it is not the flames. You could be gazing at anything and see what you saw; clouds, rustling leafs or a plastered wall. The unfocussing allows you to see the whole instead of the fragment. Our eyes have been conditioned to observe in ways that make us believe we see more, while in fact we see less. So in a more meaningful sense you saw those flames indeed.
