Marathon Man

I wonder what you’re afraid of

Is it the proximity of my existence,

or is it perhaps my words you

fear

I’ve told you -

I am not out to hurt you

Don’t you understand

My verbiage is twenty-twenty

if you’d just stop long enough

to hear it between the gasps

from your marathon escape

I won’t hurt you like you’ve

hurt me when you hand out

favors of elusive charm for

all to put under pillows and

dream upon

and me…

Like a moron; I pick up the ration

of crumbs you throw at me from

over your shoulder, while you

keep a safe distance –

All I ever wanted was your approval

But there aren’t even enough crumbs

for me to spell out one lousy made-up

word…not even a crummy vowel

amongst them

Why do you do this to me

I’m

not

going

to

hurt

you!

Well, you can stop running now –

Mr. Marathon Man

Because the crumbs are becoming

too small and obscure, and my eyes

burn and I am weary

So don’t be afraid of me

There’s no need to run anymore

I give up…you’ve won the race

you’re the Marathon Man

I totally understand this, Marilyn! I gave up a race that I wasn't even running, and the crumbs ended! Love this analogy!

Seems like he's a bad listener or fool, this is spoken from a heart thats true, yet he has no clue, held on to every word in this poem, very well expressed..

What an ego I have, I saw the title and immediately, I thought this poem must be about my love making ability. Alas, it was not.

Marylin, so good to see this post. Haven't caught up with you
in a while. I once deeply loved a man whom I would not have hurt for
the world--I learned over time that had he stayed in my intimate
proximity he would have been hurt regardless my approach.
Sometimes it's not about us, it's about them. Perhaps the hurt
is something he does not know how to heal within himself yet.
Much Love Vicky
