a negotiator's song

Wipe the board clean.
Push in the chair.
Turn off the light.
Now, silently stare
At the shimmering brightness
Out and below
Where the city lies waiting
In the night and the snow.

Count this day done;
Count the deal closed;
Count your wounds healing,
But let the rest go.
Just pick up the folders
Blue, red and green.
Now, search for your ticket.
Now, close the machine.

Think of the answers
To questions unasked.
Think of the players
And of your next task.
Think of tomorrow
But not of today.

Think of redemption
In what she might say.

Try not to remember
The look on her face
When you told her you needed
More time in the race.
Just gaze one last time
At the ebony dome.
Now, put on your jacket
And try to go home.
