He tilts her head just so,

She has remembered the rest:

Hands relaxed upon a

Book of Verse,

Intent in meditation;

She brings no light with her,

He lifts the shade

To the flash of a dove’s wing,

The scent of linseed

Heavy in the room;

Shadows move in silence

Grow longer still,

He strokes with brush

Upon canvas

Carefully, like a lover;

Studies her in quiet repose

(She is too heavy,

Her nose too sharp,

She is no prize)

And chooses burnt sienna

For her eyes;

Still, she holds herself

With certain style,

A practiced flair,

And with his gift

Those other things

Will be forgiven;

She sighs,

A strand of auburn hair

Falls down upon

Curve of lily throat;

He waits, brush lifted,

To let her settle.

He would love her,

Would she let him.

OMGosh, this is most expressive, and leaves the poor bloke wondering... no woman is a prize, but someone to be enchanted and beguiled by, until all other thoughts cease....

Leann,
I love poetry that can be interpreted many different ways. In this poem, I could see an artist, admiring his model, as he painted her. Yet, I could also see a man, whose love for a woman who did not know or care he existed, longing for what cannot be.
This is a beautiful and exquisitely written piece.

Thanks,
Jill

Leann,

Your poem brings the portrait to life. The real beauty on canvas is in the subject. In all forms of art and life, being able to subdue the shadows, fill in the blemishes and embellish the subject matter is the difference between a good work and a masterpiece. Outstanding visuals my friend. Peace, Love and Blessings Always, Paul.

Reading this the first time and then rereading it, I had the feeling that I was the artist savoring the model as I tried to capture her very being on canvas, trying to show her in her best light so to speak, only to realize she was beautiful in her own way and stirred passion just by being herself...
