Loving Yourself

People say you should love yourself
That you should be number one
But how can you do that
When people dig simply for fun?
Try looking into your eyes
And see the hope burn so hopelessly,
Watch it extinguished by another,
Leaving a tear-filled abyss of misery.
Take a breath of thick, poisoned air
And try not to cough out in protest,
Keep your head up when it's leaded
And when the choking never takes a rest.
Walk just one step in concrete boots
While trying to pretend you're fine,
Don't drag your feet in shame
Because they'll tear you up each time.
Speak out in a tiny, quiet voice
And attempt to stop it trembling,
Say what's imprinted on your heart
Don't let them believe they will win.
Wear whatever you want to
And fight to be proud to stand out
While you try to shield yourself
From the bullets you can do without.
Glance in the mirror at night
And try to look yourself in the eye,
Try to love who you are
When you're dead on the inside.

Painful but truthful write Keighley. But one has to believe in oneslef before you can expect others to do the same
