A salute to William Wallace and to the idea of freemen.
|
Wallace stands tall, bending to none,
the bridge at Stirling has just been won.
Strong of faith and proud of birth
like never before graced this earth.
He stood for king and country proud
a pledge to England he never vowed.
They slew his wife and burned his croft
striving to break his will.
Their names are long forgotten,
his is with us still.
He stood for right and country,
with sword he paved the way.
His quest for freedom and liberty,
was just as strong as his integrity.
Uniting high and low lands, serf and Lord
to run the hated Edward back to London yard.
Never wavering, eyes set straight ahead.
Loyal to country. Hanged till near dead.
Then drawn and quartered!
On London Bridge they placed his head.
His cause lived on in his country men
as free men they became.
They built a monument tall
and on it placed his name.
His spirit lives with us still,
for its Wallace and his countrymen
sitting atop that hill.
The hill that speaks of patriotism and liberty,
ready to lay down ones life
that men stay free.
The blood of Scotts from years gone by
filled with passion for liberty,
burns today in every Scott.
