I've been away awhile, working with BUSINESS issues. I would much rather be writing.

Picture from National Geographic web site.

The wildebeest of words is restless,

Seasons are changing, and the time has come to move on.

She sniffs the air of home, unique, nostalgic, warm, safe,

As safe as any part of any world can be.

There’s the waller where she and her young

Spend hours in the ooze, the slick mud a comfort

From the stinging flies, the aching heat, the interminable itching

Of her pelt, the tangles of her tail, where others watch.

The journey begins, one word piles upon another, as

The wildebeest leads in a direction she knows, has always known,

But does not know at this time and place in the same way,

For things change so, even words.

Words become sentences, twisted, difficult to push through,

The story weaves itself, always noisiest at night, as

Herds of words won’t stop.  They hesitate, meditate, ponder, and push,

Until one makes the leap into the river.

Fat crocodiles, the carnivores, await the leaders, the chance takers,

Teeth gleam and slash, blood flows. Most of the herd survives,

Moving upward from the river bank to the next plain,

The next paragraph, the next story to a new home until

The restless season demands her return journey.

Your creativity shines in this poem. I like the imagery of the brave leaping forth. There, you've captured the courage needed to share a poem or story once it's written. Excellent writing.

I love how you layered this write, starting with 'words' and building from there. I also loved the reference to mama Wildebeest...yes, keep writing.

How I wish the words would come like a thundering herd and make a splash on my blank paper. You take me on a journey that I have seen many times in stories about Africa. Like the contrast.

New subject matter does offer challenges of direction and temperament but I've never known you to cut and run. Paragraphs can be edited or discarded entirely and when enough have been written and refined the crocodiles will be stuffed with 20 pound white bond paperwads. P

Have we all not spent time in that waller? Made the leap into that river of words? Would we all not be blessed if we could so splendidly capture those words? Your corral must be bulging at the railings. Nicely done Eilene. Thanks Dick

you describe Africa's beautiful antelope wonderfully Eileen
through the hunted visuals of the untamed as too
