I've known a few people who have had to make a long commute to work, and perhaps spent the week nights in chain hotels. The sympathy I felt for them being away from their families all week inspired this poem.

It's Wednesday night,

Daddy's miles from home.

Watching the same show,

In boring room, in busy town.

It's seven pm,

He's eating dinner too.

It's pasta, tomato and ham!

It's bedtime soon.

Asking for a story,

Daddy reads the paper.

Fighting pirates, talking trains,

Wars that last forever.

Goodnight kiss from mummy,

Daddy hears click of lamp.

Go to sleep dreaming of pirates,

Or stare at the ceiling, alone.

It's Wednesday night,

Daddy home in two days.

Imagining seeing him at weekend,

While tonight you sleep away.

Always so hard on the families left behind, but then sometimes it is a necessary evil to provide what needs to be provided.....

Those trips can be fun or they can be taxing, Rosalind. But the expectation of coming home is always the same. That's what makes the trip worthwhile for me.

Through your words, you make a person know what a child goes through when a parent is missing, for a short time or long. Beautifully written poem.
