What My Parents Never Taught

How to lie and cheat and steal
How to throw away a meal
How to make another cry
How to let your spirit die

By giving in to conformity
By shedding all your loyalty
To them…

How to hate without a reason
How to hate the hardest season
How to abhor another race
How to intentionally disgrace
How to grow up and then apart

From them…

How to be some "normal kid"
How to just do what they all did
How to be more ladylike
How to fit in and be just like

All the kids who never learned
All the kids who'd always yearned
To go to college and move out
To leave their home without a doubt
To leave their folks and comfy beds
Because it never got into their heads
Maybe 'cos they'd never been taught
Or failed to embrace the simple thought
That love and life and all the things
We learned as kids are those that bring
The peace and heart that we all seek
From the strongest man to the most meek

But then perhaps my folks are not
As warm and bright as those kids got
Were mine the only two who knew
That King Jr.'s simple dream was true ?
That the myriad of different toys
Could be used by girls
and boys?
That home and hearth and family
Were all that anyone needs to be?

I wish…
I hope…
That isn't so.

*Dedicated to my mother and father.

i have chills; the words, rhythm, tone, style and message sing so clear in this poem. i want to read it again...the verses asking questions remind me of how life reveals itself to us as we live it. looked at the poem as a shape or geometric figure. it struck me as looking like a person. i really enjoyed the poem. vicki

Your parents must be proud. The good news is that more parents are now teaching the things your parents taught you. loved this poem.
