After attending a poetry reading where I was completely enraptured by the woman who read. Her poetry was about pain and loneliness. I found myself drawn into her verse. The experience gave me the strength to write about my pain and let me know that I was not alone in it. For this awakening I wrote "Poet."

Poet

I sat in the gallery and I watched

As you stripped off your armor.

I sipped my tea and saw

your soul

naked for me to examine.

I twisted it round,

Looked for your flaws

your hands trembled

and your breath, at first,

came in short, nervous quavers.

You cleared your throat and began.

Your voice, shy to my ears,

but as you spoke your voice grew.

Your words, screaming your agony.

And I watched.

Amazed, I listened

you closed your eyes,

knowing your verse by heart,

Your exposed heart

beckoned mine to join you

I was drawn closer with every pulse

until we were one.

I drew from your strength

as you drew from mine, and

Together we were strong.
