WINTER AGAIN
by Z.B.McClure
So long ago it seems,
I saw that mound of snow.
All by himself,
defying Spring,
refusing to let go.
~
Like Frosty Snowman's promise,
(he came back,
you know)
So also vowed,
this mound of snow.
~
And now since Summer's
bid farewell with balmy breath-
and Autumn's leaves
anticipate
Encroaching death...
~
That mound of snow
shall once more come to be,
until he's reclaimed ev'ry
hill and ev'ry field.
Ev'ry mountain
Ev'ry valley
Ev'ry rooftop
Ev'ry tree,
Our mound of snow,
shall once more be.
~
For as long
as this old earth shall spin:
God has ordained
each Spring to end.
God has ordained
Winter again.

I love it!
My friends often ask me -- Why did you leave Florida and move to Minnesota. I tell them, "It never snows in Florida!" I love the seasons -- all of them! Your poem describes it perfectly.
You have just become one of my favorite authors. |

| They come and they go, but for sure, God has ordained they shall come again. I don't live in snow counry, but I can appreciate your descriptions about the snow. Well done. |

| Winter already? At least a good freeze will kill off the mosquitoes and bring to an end the grasshopper plague. Even Winter can be a blessing. |

| Aren't you getting a little ahead of yourself, there, Zach? ;) Seriously, though. This part for the whole argument is kind of cute, especially with the reference to Frosty, but that jars in a kind of harsh counterpoint to a few of the lines (particularly "bit farewell with balmy breath" and "encroaching death") marring the unity of the piece a touch. Don't get me wrong, it does pull my heart strings toward the perennial power of our purposeful Deity. For that I applaud you. |

I anticipated that you were going to use the snow to signify the washing of our sins from us, through Christ's atonement... maybe you did in a metaphorical sense? I liked the poem, but to me I would prefer to think of the life and living and rebirth of Spring that is promised us through Christ's sacrifice than the winter that is cold and more difficult to get through. Just my opinion...
Respectfully,
Cryssa :~) |
