New loves have no immunity.

Castles of tranquility

chosen not for our nobility

draw gates

raised too late

before they're closed

Huns that lay in waiting

have sealed in

misery and fate

securities' moat

now the favored scapegoat

bridged with barbaric impunity

new loves have no immunity

the flames of loves past

now ablaze on the mast

where chevrons of bliss

wilted from disregard

high ground's security

now tainted with betrayal's

wicked impurity

mere armor not the mettle

to withstand the banishment

of a heart that will not care

I like this allegory. I remember the winter of 1966 when I steeled myself for engineering graduate studies in a cold little room high above the street. On the radio, Simon and Garfunkel sang their classic, "I am a rock, a fortress steep and mighty..." It fit my situation perfectly.
