The Barter

The art of the barter in an early twentieth-century American market place.

vintage carts rumble across cobblestones

wooden wheels grind and crunch clay

their gritty sound grating to the ears

this market place bustles with vendors

announcing the fares in chorded chants

Cambridge town fish mongers cry out

"BLUE CRABS FOR SALE!

jimmies and females fresh from the docks!

sea bass and bay oysters, salty and juicy!

gather round, gather round, over here!

get your pick before they're gone!"

baskets of tomatoes firm and bloody red

rivaling a squeezed blush on a maiden's cheeks

cobs of corn, full firm and sweet

silk fine yellow with pink ends

farmer's crops line this market street

peddler and buyer alike engaged in

the steps of a brokered dance

wills and wants eventually meet

as compromise has found a way out of defeat

when the money is right they'll make the swap

empty buyer's pockets for empty

monger and farmer's carts

a market's pulse fills the morning air

with men parting in the grace of the barter

Similar to the Farmer's Markets of today...sans cobblestones. I enjoy the hustle-bustle you've painted in this poem, Jon, and the aromas away from the fishmongers :o) Your poetry is always so unique and fascinating...and enjoyed!
Blessings and Love - Micke

Jon,
A wonderful assault on my senses, I touch, see, hear, smell everything in this bustling world, a celebration of doing and being;
excellent imagery throughout, the image that really takes me:

baskets of tomatoes firm and bloody red
rivaling a squeezed blush on a maiden's cheeks...

so evocative, sensual and romantic.
This is very fine indeed.

Money changes everything. Bartering requires a fine sense of mental judgement that I'm not sure I would like, like bargaining in a poor foreign market where you could buy the whole thing. It must be rough when you have little to barter with.

Jon, I'm locked into the sounds and smells and sights of
this early marketplace by your exciting word pictures. I
love your "tomatoes firm and bloody red rivaling a squeezed
blush on a maiden's cheeks" and of course the fish monger's
cry, "BLUE CRABS FOR SALE!" Ah, to have been there. -gene.
