Still We Rise

This poem I wrote after the 9/11 attacks.

Here I sit staring out the window
Here I sit watching the rain fall
Watching the sweet surrender of the ground
Watching the never ending joy of the clouds
The angels are crying
For the devil is near
Everything is covered with blood
Blood so sweet and tender
Everyone is ready for war
But our lives still go on
Many days and many nights
People stay awake with tears in their eyes
Then think to themselves, still we rise
Is the devastation?
Maybe not
With a smile we can say, still we rise
With every morning and every day
Still we rise to greater lengths
Still we rise to mourn our losses
With every minute of every day
Still we rise
Standing strong
To begin again
