A haunting, moody, reflective poem from Rosalia de Castro, as featured in the book, ROSALIA DE CASTRO: SELECTED POEMS, translated by John Howard Reid.

Happiness

 rendered from the Spanish of

Rosalía de Castro

I don’t really know what I’m looking for!

I only know I’m eternally seeking,

seeking, seeking, seeking

in the air, the fields,

the sky!

I don’t even know what I’m looking for!

But it’s something I lost –

I don’t know where nor when –

and I never find it

(not even when I dream that it’s invisibly present

in everything I touch and everything I see).

Happiness!

You’re not just an empty dream!

I know for sure that you exist!

But I have the feeling – the certainty –

that I’ll never find you again

on earth or in the air,

and not even in the sky!

John Reid
