Body slept easy
At 3am

But the city streets,
were still breathing, burning
vomiting, pissing
hailing cabs and snatching chains.

Hookers added mileage

Grifters lined their pockets
with the innocent

I tossed and turned at the activity

Felt the extreme end of sadness
sweating at my broken heart

On the back nine
with love
who tells me there is no more
another man now
no longer me

running down empty expressways

reading billboards
and staring thru the open windows
of dirty brick apartment buildings
seeing love inside
with that other man

Long hair, white
Younger.

Better in every way

Sitting on a couch with her legs
Crossed

Smiling in Chinese slippers

Loving someone else
looking happy and flirtatious

fresh faced and clean
2 butterflies
in butterfly love

no need to call her back or fight
she wouldn’t come anyway

our butterfly love died
fell to the earth
and decomposed
became fertilizer for a new love

A love minus the wonder of surprise
Or the thrill of exploration

We started the construction
of a highway that would circle
The world

But never made it out of Queens

Stirring, opening eyes to the
Knowledge of how much of my heart she owns
Brings me relief and great sorrow

Now this one I really loved. The reality of life on the streets through its continuous cycles while once shared love vanishes in those vignettes you paint with words.
Excellent work.

Unutterably sad. This feels real, and it makes me ache.
