The last part of a very dear friend's life. His name was Shadow.

Shadows flicking back and forth
too and fro across the page
darkened relics of real things
copies easily forgotten.
As light fades shadows grow deeper
darker and more sinister
exaggerating fear to larger depths
heavy shadows linger.
Light forces its way onto the page
fading shadows to light grey
they nearly disappear to nothing
but still they lay forgotten.
Shadows flicking with movement past
writing saddening words
the shadow of the pen that’s moving
will disappear so fast.
But as the shadows lay in silence
the invisible words shout out
“Remember me when I leave
when I get locked up in the light!”
As dawn breaks I say goodbye
to shadows as they leave.
With one last look they turn away.
My shadow won't return to me.
