a war poem with a twist

The Breath of a Soldier

The breath of a soldier smells like

The patriotic farewell

As streamers break

And the ship departs

To a symphony of whistles, clapping

Shouts of love

Lost in the wind

The breath of a soldier smells like

A toothbrush

Long since broken, bristles worn down

And faded

The breath of a soldier smells like

The tinned beef and dry crackers

And a tiny rare sweet.

The breath of a soldier smells like

The call of fire, weapons armed

And the taste of gunpowder.

The breath of a soldier smells like

The silent tears shed

For the loss of a mate

A fellow soldier, a brother.

The breath of a soldier smells like

The cold wet misery

Of a wintery funeral.

The breath of a soldier smells like

A battalion retreating from the battlefront.

The breath of a soldier smells like

The bitter reunion

With a place once called home

Now a pit of wandering nobodies.

The breath of a soldier smells like

...

It smells of loss.
