A poetic version of a story I once heard about how Oya met Shango. There are many stories, depending on the region and traditions. This is one of my favorites.

it seemed the sun would bake me in
the place where i stood still
the wind slowly eroding my soul
cutting through my will

but a voice carried on fallen
feathers broke the curse
the journey would be dangerous
but stillness would be worse

seas and deserts crossed to meet
the legend that is you
all my hopes were wagered on
the tales that they were true

now looking in your eyes i see
that all was not in vain
that i had met a man whether
the moon should wax or wane

but then the question still remained
if through the sand and blood
you could see the woman wrapped
in dirty cloak and hood

if the mess of matted hair and
the lightning in my eyes
would set your heart on fire or
bring forth a jeer or cries

i entered your kingdom with my
attendants at the ready
and signalled them to fall back
approaching you with my gaze steady

making way for the lovliest lass
in all my former lands
dressed up in my robe and crown
rose water scenting her hands

as you stood and stepped towards her
i thought that you had failed
you lifted her delicate hand
kissed it and summoned ale

and then through the festivities
treated her like a queen all night
and so i treated her the same
as if i were her knight

but just before the time had come
for all to finally retire
you turned to me to thank me for
the joke because i'm a liar

politely took the crown from my
fine subject's head and then
understanding my situation
tossed it to your men

i am humbled by your acceptance
grateful that my words are heeded
awed by your generosity in giving
something i never thought i needed

bending to my tender knees
i place my head beneath your hand
my heart my sword my everything
i am only yours to command

I was extremely pleased to have the opportunity to read this most excellent poem. It is the first of yours i have read and if the others are as good, I will visit often.

I really like your style and especially your flow. The poem seems to have a heartbeat of its own.

Well done

Oh, I loved this. Much womanly wisdom here. I have another friend also who will love it even more. I'll have to send it to her. ~~Nordette

Very strong and poignant write. You have what it takes to make it in this cruel world.
