Out The Window
In a warm room a canary looks out the window
And sees drifting snow pile up along a fence
The bird has no notion as to what it is witnessing
Yet it accepts it as part of the natural order
And it soon returns to the song it was meant to sing
In a public school classroom a girl stares out the window
And watches the ebb and flow of traffic at a street light
At the moment she does not hear what the teacher is saying
But it does not matter to the girl for her mind is elsewhere
And there is nothing troubling her at all in her universe
On a cargo ship on the high seas a mariner peeks out the portal
And sees unending waves slap up against the vessel’s hull
But these don’t impinge upon him for he is thinking of a home
Thousands of miles away where his children are with their mother
For this brief moment he is there with them and he feels content
While I contemplate the texture of the words that I want to put down
My eyes drift across the room and through the glass to the outside
Where the land sits quietly and majestically in a frozen moment
I do not see any of this as I test the resonance of juxtaposed syllables
Yet I can sense that it is out there and that it is guides and calms me
