This is a poem about the mammalian tendency to see the world in terms of our group versus all others.

Us and Them

It is all about us and them
Those that we stand up for
And those that we condemn
It’s the backbone of our lore
All else spreads from this stem
We unwittingly make it our floor

A chimp wanders into the blind
He is now in unknown territory
He is seen by others of his kind
Yet they don’t accept his story
They attack him from behind
He dies mangled and gory

A rogue lion sees the cubs
Attended by their loving mother
He hides in the bush where he rubs
His scent deep into the cover
He pounces from the shrubs
And she’ll mate with another

A nation is starting to run dry
And takes note of another land
Where vast reserves are in supply
A campaign quickly comes to plan
A righteous one that nobody can deny
And soon there is blood in the sand

The demons are on the other side
Whilst the heroic stand with us
Holding up the banners of pride
While the devils snort and cuss
They must be made to abide
And recognize that we are just

We see with tainted eyes
Oblivious to what we do
Or that we spread our lies
And twist the truth too
It’s all done to aggrandize
Our right to wear the shoe

It’s the imperative of territory
The quest to hold down our own
History is riddled with this story
Even though the lessons are shown
We never learn from the allegory
Our actions are always set in stone

The blood truth is in our biology
Nestled deep within our brains
We may aspire to lofty theology
But some instincts are engrained
Producing in us a set dichotomy
That forever causes us strain

We set down laws of behavior
That curtails what we can do
This code we hope is our savior
So that we can curb what ensues
But if someone’s the wrong flavor
Then these laws are through

It is all about us and them
Those that we stand up for
And those that we condemn
It’s the backbone of our lore
All else spreads from this stem
We unwittingly make it our floor

This one leaves me feeling tense and on edge, perhaps born of the "strain" of which you write. Yes, I think that like is drawn unto like. I think you have an amalgam of biology and psychology and spirituality here, yet I believe in and trust in empathic relation, compassion and appreciation for those outside our fence. I believe in connection over separation. Your words validate these things for me in an interesting and inverse way. Don't ever let your ink run dry, Joe!

THIS WORK IS SO INTERESTING AND CERTAINLY A REMARKABLE OCCURRENCE THAT IT APPEARS ON THE 'NEW POETRY' LIST AT THIS TIME BECAUSE IT SUBSTANTIATES HOW 'SIMILAR' IDEAS ARE EXPRESSED SO DIFFERENTLY. I, JUST A FEW DAYS AGO, SUBMITTED A POEM BY MY SON, WHICH I DO FROM TIME TO TIME, ENTITLED; CLUB US. 'US'...THE FACTOR FROM ONE POET, AND THE CAUSE OF IT FROM ANOTHER. BOTH OF WHICH I TOTALLY AGREE WITH. THANKS FOR SHARING AND PLEASE, WHEN YOU HAVE THE TIME, DROP BY MY DEN AND TAKE A LOOK AT HIS WORK AND YOU'LL SEE WHAT I MEAN. LOVE, BLESSINGS & FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
