Life

My mind keeps racin’
And tracin’
What’s happened to me over the years
And why I’ve shed so many tears

Movin’ from here to there
Hopin’ to settle somewhere

Meetin’ new friends
That ain’t friends to the end
Just lookin’ to see
What they can get from me

Going to college and quittin’
Not interested in sittin’
To listen to teachers tell me how to read and write
Knowing damn well
I’ll have to fight
With all my might
Because I’m a black woman

Findin’ a low payin’ job
Just so I can turn
The knob
To my own place of solitude
When I ain’t in the mood
To hear the shit
That’s being spit
By folks
Pretending they like me
When I know they could care less
bout what I wanna possess
In life

Dating brothers that just wanna settle
Watching their sons peddle
The one thing that’s killin’ us
DRUGS

Giving birth to a beautiful daughter
And will slaughter
The first person that fucks with her
I refuse
To let her go through
The shit that’s happened to me
But I can’t blame nobody else
But me

I’ll teach her to demand respect
As well as give to those deserving
It’s my daughter’s life
That I’m workin’ on preserving
Apple pies and family dinners
So she can teach her children
How to be winners
In this cruel place
We call
LIFE

I’ve learned a lot
With all that’s happened
And if it seems like I’m snappin’
I AM!

God is teachin’ me a lesson
But at the same time
He keeps sendin’ those blessins’
Allowing me to see another day
And hopefully send others
On their way
To a life more abundant
Without a feelin’ of redundant
Failure

If you fail don’t give up
Look up
And/or get down on your knees
And know that
God
Is your only friend
Indeed.

Hi Denise,
Didn't know you had a love for verse. Enjoyed all your poems. But "Life" definitely hit a spot. Don't stop with the verses Girl !!! Rememember, The written word, regardless to if it's a poem, short story, novel, or a short letter to a friend, is the key to the soul. Out of it, dreams are born, and Encouragement had. So keep on keeping on.
Forward Forever.....Backward Never...
Peace Out, Much Love.......J.P.

"Life" - somehow reading the powerful descriptive emotions stirred hope that I might be able to continue on struggling to learn how to be real as a Mom and woman. I will return here to read the poem again when needing to be reminded not to give up the battle.

Wow. Such a heartfelt, raw, emotional piece. I'm almost dizzy. I like your style.
