I looked into a covered mirror and found the face of mortality staring back at me--Oh, go away!

I feel the weight
of all I've yet to be
etching my bones
like acid tears--
The best of my
intentions blaze
in the dark-star
crucible of fear--

My heart has set
a far horizon
as the finish line
to legacy--
I hope to leave
some lasting trace
to mark the place
I dared be me--

No stone wants
to sink beneath
the silver liquid
just at dawn--
No man wants
to fade to black
a ghost while living
that doesn't belong--

If only heart and mind--
and my spirit's cage--
were equally partnered,
glove and fist--
I'd scrawl my vision
across the void
and make my name
a cometary epithet--

Betraying flesh
denies desire,
and fails ambition's
adamant will--
My soul is longing
for the hidden country
where dreams take flight
on wings of steel--

This is an excellent flowing construct with a strong and assimilable message. Especially evocative for me!

I raised my hand in salute. Respect, acceptance, success, is such a fickle pursuit at times.

"A cometary epithet" Indeed!

Good one ...

Lee, this one takes my breath away. To be remembered, to feel like you made a difference...that you left something worthwhile in your wake... I understand all too well.

There's a rhythm here that is almost hypnotic... I get it too when I look in the mirror, something I usually avoid these days.

"Betraying flesh denies desire, and fails ambitions adamant will--"
an awesome line
speaking of duality fears.

I will climb upon my wings of steel the very next time my mirror tells me of fleeting time, aging body and flagging soul. Excellent write.
