She Dances

This is a poem I wrote as a response to the prompt..."Veils" and represents my vision of belly dancing...

Veils binding, blue, silver shining

Then unwinding, she drops it, head begins moving

Arms flowing, up and down, then intertwining

Wrists twisting, finger cymbals set the beat

Slowly sensuously, her silver breast shimmies

Hips find a contrasting movement

Jutting her hip first left and then right

Bending her knee, she gathers her veil

Circling she bumps her hip, each separately

                                         Stimulating, she circles, enticingly

                        Catching the faster beat,

                        She shimmies and twirls

Lost in the wonder, loving the dance

Veil flying free, as freely as she

It's most difficult to describe action like this. You've done it beautifully. Well done!

So many subtle sounds that make this work. "Slowly sensuously, her silver breast shimmies"... all those "s" sounds at work-- a sensual sound, yet snake like (just like her movements). Here's another line: "Wrists twisting, finger cymbals set the beat" inner-line sound-echoing, and again with the "s" sounds. And my favorite, "Veil flying free, as freely as she" That "ee" echoed over and over again, in "ing" and "free" and "freely" and "she". And the "f" alliterating the whole of it. And not many know this, but "v" is "f's" twin-- shaped the same, just voiced instead of voiceless, so to the mind, when reading this line out loud, you lips find a familiar path, and they like it... a lot! Either you're a lot more "kinet" than you let on about poetry, or else you're a natural with stuff.

You should read some of David Hightower's poetry. His poetry is a study in alliteration-- each line echoes something, and I love reading it out loud. And it's mostly intuitive, he tells me. But honestly, when it's done too much on purpose, it's not nearly as good.

This is good. Those sound-echoes make the picture pop-out alive.

You certainly covered and uncovered all of the seven veils in beautiful poetic dance, well done! Jasmin Horst
