The Man Who Loved Funerals
by Maryanne Raphael

The plot builds relentlessly and so well that by the end one does not know whether to laugh or cry..

I’m swimming in love when I look into your eyes. The deepest colored brown and no matter what‘s thrown about, there’s never a frown.

My heart tells me you once stood tall with mud to your thighs in a trench at Ypres. If I close my eyes I see you poised, ready to go over the top to create a crater and so certainly die.

Flicking a glance over your shoulder I think for a second you know…

The whistle screams, a male voice shouts ‘come on lads’ and with a pull on a rope, you’ve gone.

I’m swimming in love when I look into your eyes….
