With wincing at clichés such as “Wake up and smell the roses” one is inclined to explore the root sources of such maxims.

Be As It May

Passion and passivity
grow from the roots of one
as does sincerity
duplicitous in multiple guises
the three-leaf oak
the seemingly stoic mantis

Confuse not the bogus
with the bona fide

the bogus an awaiting inflammation
while the bona fide flows freely
as innocence
and compassion
even as many miss the circus behind joy
so bent on sidestepping predators of virtue

forgetting not caution
be as it may

This poem feels to me like a molecule with a powerhouse nucleus. "duplicitous in multiple guises" and "the bogus an awaiting inflammation" are absolutely loaded. And "....the bona fide flows freely" channels the Universal Life Energy concept. An entire philosophy can be shaped around the last two lines of stanza three. Beyond excellent this. ~~ Diana

Interesting interpretation of a timeworn cliché. I find myself using them more often than I would like, but when they fit a particular situation I go right ahead and use them. I just let it be.
