We memorialize, but we can only imagine what some go through to remember. (This is a departure from my usual style. I would appreciate your comments concerning whether the one-sided conversation works)

Group: A Soldier's Commemoration

... what about my dead legs?
my wheels work fine

who can walk on water anyway?
is that like the float of a butterfly
the sting of a bee?

oh how literal the charade
how scary the purveyors that smile

trying to rid the world of...
you know
that world of creative exposure
the daring of reason
of dust
c'mon
that's how they trained us

i'm supposed to listen
listen to the bellowing
the brainwashing platitudes
expunging our reality
the frying of our...

christ man
don't open that book again
don't lift that ribbon marker
prattle and point
"see...it says it right here...see"
not again!

says you

maybe for some
not me
not the innocent kids flyin' through the smoke
i don't dream of angels man

you cringe

tell me
is there one...
you know
a "one" who will bless us all
not just us soldier guys
livin' in these chairs
those turbaned kids back there hobblin' ‘round
their stumps dangling
their one good arm leaning on a crutch
c'mon
is there?

fine

i know my way back

i like this conversational style, Odin,
it's immediate and draws the reader in,
i feel part of it; beneath the casual,
sometimes offhand phrasing lies worthwhile
and disturbing truth...well expressed

Yes, I believe the one-sided conversation works brilliantly! It is an intimate witness, it is riveting.

As always you have spun your craft excellantly.
