The headlines are cluttered now with “coming out of the closet” confessions. But what of the über-gender confession uttered by so few for fear of being seen as either not masculine enough, or not feminine enough? PC identity is getting to be a bore for some of us. Perhaps we need to get over ourselves and just BE.

Are we not all
Akin to this woman/man-child
Before us
Reflected within us
At times one
At times another?

Is not the timidity of shy
A leavening of the feast to come
The preparation that will satiate
Fulfill the appetite
Regrets the loss of anticipation
The aroma of what was once to dream?

Is not gender identity evolution's misnomer?

Doesn't the boy fashion after the mother
Evolve into the man
Graduate into consciousness
The feminine/masculine side
Now grown
Now ready
The mother of the father
The boy
The girl
The girl
The boy?

Dreamt and realized
Nature's surreal puzzle unsolved
Yet walking beside us
Within us
About us
A reality accessible to some
Feared and rejected by others

There is an intellectual challenge to your work, Odin, which I find truly wonderful.
I measure by humanity and kindness too. The heart is all that ever matters to me.

Your poem raises tough questions. I too, am surprised the number of public announcements, including a guy I worked with for a number of years who wants to be called, Rachel.

I am so glad I never went through all that turmoil and fear. My manhood is not something I ever had to question or change. No need for me to write poetry about it or worry about being, “found out.” Or picked on. It is strange though, how many of these tortured people seem to excel in what they do in spite of all the soul-searching that seems to take up most of their time. Maybe it's in an elixir for success that I'm missing out on.

I think you've solved that nature puzzle right here in this writing. What a nucleate rendering of the universal human condition. Glistening words: "Is not the timidity of shy/A leavening of the feast to come". "Regrets the loss of anticipation" marvelously comingles with the scent of longing in the next line. " Is not gender identity evolution's misnomer?" is sterling....key word being "identity" which can be synonomous with 'label' in my book of ideas. I'd best write a blog in response to "Woman/Man-Child". Yes, I'll do that. ~~ Diana

over the years i've learned skin colour
race language ethnicity orientation
are not worth a fig but unfortunately
to many, to too many, they count;
i measure by humanity, kindness, behaviour
and expect to be measured by those in return.
Thank you, Odin, you're always worth it.

There are many times, as a nurse working in mental health, that I have heard many clients state that they do not know the who, what or why of what they are. They look into the mirror, (is this their soul?) and ask that question. Are they afraid to answer that question even to their own inner person? This particular puzzle, of which you write, has many pieces and many reasons for the paths people take or choose not to take....Great piece of writing

I've been noticing the coming out of the closet confession as well. I remember a year or so ago that a girl in grade school, I think she was eight or nine, who told her mother she was gay. I think she was too young to fully understand her sexual desires. I blame some, of not a lot, of that kind of situation on the school system pushing the envelope when it comes to "gays." The rest of it, the coming out dribble almost daily, again is media-originated. Like, in the day and age who cares? As you say, just be yourself and back off from confessing it to the stupid news outlets all over the web.
