Written in response years ago to the school shootings that were happening almost daily. Very dark, possibly offensive to some, so I am rating it PG - 13.

One Way Ticket

The air is chilled tonight
Nothing stirs around here anymore,
Chalk lines come alive
On the speckled ground
Love took the one way ticket to hell

They said there were no signs
Yet they screamed all over
Their bloodthirsty eyes pleaded a new tale
But the town was blind
And love took the one way ticket to hell

The world will pretend to care
As they turn their ugly heads
This could never happen here
Fate could not give more,
And love takes the one way ticket to hell.

So let’s have another drink,
We’ll blame the movies,
Forget the children
While we sing and watch love depart
With a one way ticket to hell.

I identify with this all too much. Though you say it much better than I, mine was personal. It's called "A Wife's Tears" and was about my daughter's husband who was shot down in a drive-by shooting.
When will the craziness end?
