I have not yet lived to see total equality. Perhaps I won't. And what a shame that would be.

For all the battles won
 and wars lost
Over trying to decide on
The shape of the table
Where peace will finally
Lie dying;

For every victory over patronism,
Over predisposed diagnoses of neuroses,
Over enough collective drugs to
Stun the Universe into submission;

Like a recalcitrant mule,
Loved only for its ability
 to pull a plow
              into forever.

For every time I say “No”
                                      and mean it,
For every time I hear “No”
                                      and do not accept it;

For giving my body back to me;
For the sparks that live,
Winking cats’ eyes
 in the chain of womenkind,
              a chain of lights,
                          a spiral chromosome,
                                      an affirmation,
That we are,
              and will be,
                                      and have ever been.

Can I hear “Amen!”?
