Watch Me, Daddy

My father died in my arms the last day of January. He left this life like he lived it: calm and absolutely unafraid. His last words to me were, "Oh, don't be afraid, it's beautiful, it's exactly what I hoped it would be!" And he slowly passed away, a slight smile on his face. And a precious gift to an only child.

“Daddy, watch me, Daddy!”
Every milestone, every step,
The two-wheeler that
Fought me,
Tooth and spoke,
And all the while it was
“Daddy, watch me, Daddy!”
And he did.

And then I grew up.
And the refrain of
“Daddy, watch me, Daddy!”
Became: “You just watch me, Daddy!”
At all the plays, all the games,
All the disasters,
He did.

And then I grew away.
There was no more
“Daddy, watch me, Daddy!”
I was days and miles and
A cosmos away, on a good day.
I really didn’t want
My daddy watching.
But he did.

And one day
I realized that he was still watching.
And I was always his daughter.
And he loved me.
We met halfway and it was magic.

So now for several years,
I have been able to shower him
With love, with attention, with
Anything his heart desired, and
His heartburn loved.
And even then, child turned parent
To childlike father,
He was my dad.
And he watched me.

And as he lay dying,
Peaceful, but dying still,
I said, “Daddy, watch me, Daddy,”
And he smiled
And squeezed my hand.
“Daddy, watch me, Daddy!
He will.

Patricia, I'm sorry I'm late getting here to read this
most moving and beautifully written poem to your Daddy.

Wow, that's heartbreaking, beautiful and touching- I related to this poem big time, and thankfully, my Dad is still here with me and we are sharing happy times-I know yours is still with you, too, and he is watching you from heaven. Wonderful poem, this should be published.

Powerful poem. He was a fortunate daddy to have such a loving daughter.

"I was days and miles and
A cosmos away, on a good day.
I really didn’t want
My daddy watching."

Loving parents know there may be a growing time for their children where the kids have to be away for a time to find their place in the world and the parents are there waiting for the time that the child will mature and come home. Beautiful poem.

Then the best years are ahead until our parents leave us. One day we will be the one to squeeze our child's hands and let them know we will always love them--even from beyond.

Beautiful, and it brought tears to my eyes. You were lucky with your Poppa, that's for sure! And now you've got a friend on the other side... :)

PATRICIA...I HAVE BEEN 'TOUCHED' BEYOND MEASURE WITH THIS TRIBUTE...FILLED WITH SUCH GENUINE LOVE AND RESPECT FOR A MAN THAT WAS INDEED...A FATHER TO HIS CHILD. FOR THAT'S ALL WE REALLY WANT...FROM INFANCY-UP...TO BE WATCHED AND TO BE LOVED. YOU HAVE BEEN OVERFLOWING BLESSED WITH THE 'RICHNESS' THAT TRUELY MATTERS AND 'GOLD' THAT WILL NEVER FADE FROM YOUR MEMORY. I KNOW IT WAS DIFFICULT FOR YOU BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING AND GOD BLESS YOU, AS HE HEALS YOU MORE AND MORE EACH DAY.
LOVE, JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Patti,
My deepest sympathy...and your excellent poem is testimony to a fine man and the great father-daughter bond you had, a true, pure love.
