House Not Home

It's not hard to figure out, but my father was by no means just an alcoholic. There was more then anyone will ever know.

Could you tell me what today is?
I've been sick for quite some time
Could you tell me where I'm going?
I have no place in mind
Could you tell me who I am?
I lost myself years ago
Could you tell me who you are?
I've got nothing left to show

For the sleepless nights and the tiring mornings
Waiting patiently for your spacious return
Just a little girl taking care of her world
Knowing you didn't have a single concern

About the days you'd leave her all alone
Out doing what you thought had no price
Forgetting the bills and the amounts of food
I guess everyone has that uncontrollable vice

Could you tell me who would do that?
To someone so fragile and young
Could you tell me what she thought?
I bet it's "just on the tip of your tongue"
Could you tell me how to keep going?
After suffering such undeserved abuse
Could you tell me why, fucking why?
Don't you dare blame the booze

For the times he can't remember and the ones she can't forget
Remembering that he needs help and she is all he's got
Just a little girl lost in somebody else's bad world
Looking for an easy and fast way out

From the constant hurt and loneliness
Always trying to get him to stay
Can't live in a house that's not a home
He's always going away

How sad and yet no bitter resentment, you are right though, all hoses are not "homes" and that is what is needed, "homes" where all the love is. Very well written....

Be always safe,
Karen

Brandi... a lot of my writing came from teenaged experiences with an alcoholic parent too. The writing helped me get through it. You may even want to try writing in another voice using fiction. Inventing a character who can overcome these trials may help. I know times will get better for you. Art will get you through.

Brandi,

What a heart-wrenching story about a broke home. It's all too common. Wonderful and insightful write.
