This poem was written out of frustration. A person who did not really know me, had past judgement on me and that was disturbing. I thought to myself, I can live my life worrying about what people think and letting them define me, or I can define myself. I choose the latter. This poem is a result of my frustration.

In this Book of Life

We all will contribute a chapter
We will all provide a verse.
Some will be of the many joys,
Others will be of the curse.

The book will have a beginning,
but like time, there is no end.
You can read it if you want to,
But I would rather scribe with the pen.

I want to write of life’s challenges,
Others may tell of their plight.
I want the reader to know,
As the author, I also had fight.

When the critics review it,
And when the story is told,
There will be no doubts in the reader’s mind
I authored my destined soul.

The reviews may make some of us happy,
Other shaken by the facts,
But we all must live within the truth
There is no plagiarizing that.

There is no late night edition,
or a “sold out” sign on the shelf.
Utilize the pen to its fullest,
Write your destiny yourself.

Do not allow for erasers
To be placed unto your print
A deletion means that part of life
Never did exist,

Tell of the hand that life dealt you,
But don’t cry about the cards you were dealt.
As you write your own destiny
Be happy in yourself.

No Pulitzer Prize awaits you.
No mention Reader Digest
Do not be lead by the preface
Write your destiny yourself.
