THE LIST

One heart that is still beating

From one more life we saved today

One more but it won’t ever

Ever take the pain away

If it worked the way I wanted

If it worked the way I wished

For each one I save each new day

I could cross another name off the list

The letters kneel and seem to beg

For relief from a fading plight

For some way for to take a yesterday so wrong

And find a way to make it right

Today we saved a family

Mom and dad, two kids all told

As I lay aside my helmet and wipe away the grime

That never ending list unfolds

You can write them down, those names tell me

You can continue to hope and wish

You can pull a rabbit out of the hat each day

But you will never subtract from this list

For each stumbling form we grasp

And carry to the light

I see only another that we lost

The day a sky of blue turned to a stone night

In my dreams we lift them up

And carry them to the top of that steel

We walk out with them hand in hand

And it’s not uselessness I feel

A single heart that is still beating

One more that is yet alive today

One more and one more and one more again

But it will never take the pain away

If life worked the way I wanted

If life worked the way I wished

For every soul brought back from the brink

I could cross out…

Or resurrect…

One more name from that list

One more heart still beating

Just my own, not the heart I wish

No matter how many I rescue from those flames

You’re forever waiting for me on that list

Cade,

It's good to see you once again. You've been missed.

A shattering write--too many lost that awful day. Thank you for continuing to remind us of the ultimate sacrifice paid--343 lives live on in your powerful, well written words.
