Day of Birth
Tomorrow tiptoes in with the dawn
Anticipation holds hands with dread
The day you came into the world
A thirty-ninth day of birth you never met
There is no cake this year
But still you hold my heart
I bought my gift to give to you
Of myself, just a part
The candlelight is shining
Though it might be a tear in my eye
The light illuminates your face
Forever frozen now in time
And the pain, it is nearly unbearable
To know I have to celebrate this day
Without you here beside me
But it is a cost that I will pay
To keep you alive and smiling
To know you’ll save the day
To know though the shadows stretches before me
That you will not fade away
The gift, it is a picture
Of your proud, beautiful profile against the sky
A sky so blue and full of promise
Promise that we’d never have to say goodbye
It is a little lie that comforts me
It keeps me safe at night
To hold onto hope long after it withers
To hold onto day long after darkness claims the light
Today came in on mist and whispers
Old memories play in my head
Memories of that day of yours
Another day of birth you never met
Even without you here to hold my hand
And blow out candles bright and strong
I will celebrate the years we did have
I will celebrate you right where you belong
For all those days before
The thirty eight that came first
Here I am today with my memories
To celebrate your day of birth
