I will fight to regain my breath

To find some pure air through this smoke and soot

I will struggle to gain purchase on these ruins

Tearing flesh, shredding boot

I will listen for your voice

I will wait until I hear you call

And I will carry you to shelter

I will keep you safe from all

I will cough the dust from my lungs

Wipe the grime from my eyes

I will steady these quaking hands

Into this wasteland I will rise

I will listen till I hear your voice

I will wait until I hear you call

And I will carry you to shelter

I will keep you safe from all

I will claw my way through the steel and brick

I will ignore the cuts that bleed

I will hear only your voice

And the wishes of my heart I will heed

And I will listen till I hear you call

I will wait until I hear your voice

And I will carry you to safety

It is as a heart beats, not just a choice

I will carry you home

When a moment past was long ago and far away

When the heat of reality hits

When I am the one left calling

As that wall of fire burns brighter, then splits

You will listen until you hear my voice

You will wait until you hear me call

And, little one, you will carry me to shelter

And keep me safe from all

When you cough the dust that coats your lungs

And wipe the grime from your burning eyes

When you steady hands that quake

Into the wasteland you will rise

And you will listen till you hear me call

You will wait until you hear my voice

And you will carry me to safety

It is as sure as another heartbeat, not just a choice

And, little one, you will carry me home
