Mortal Wounds

Injuries that do not bleed

Damage that never heals

One day or four years

Makes no difference in how you feel

They are all mortal wounds

Invisible or ripping you apart, it matters not

They are all mortal wounds

Each day a new battle to be fought

The first one struck that Tuesday morn’

Each day since has passed without relief

As months went by with no word

Till that November day made the loss complete

They are all mortal wounds

Hidden from sight or worn on your sleeve

A moment’s peace you cannot find

Each dawn brings new disbelief

They are all mortal wounds

You can hide, and some will pretend

But these mortal wounds will never grow into scars

They will be with you till the lonely end

It is an injury that will not bleed

Irreparable harm that will not heal

One moment, one day, four years

Changes nothing in how you feel

They are all mortal wounds

They kill you all at once or a slice at a time, but it matters not

They are all mortal wounds

Every day another battle to be fought

Four years ago seems like only yesterday

Each date on the calendar brings pain anew

These invisible cuts and bruises on my heart

Each one of them a mortal wound

Poet, it’s said that time heals all wounds, but the tragic events that unfolded on September 11, 2001, truly feels and seems like yesterday. Each day since that horrific day has brought more devastation and destruction to our planet and its people. One can only hope it will all end sooner rather than later. An excellent poetic tribute. Thanks for sharing it. Take good care and be well.
