A time for reflection.

The Olympics:   2012

Once every four years
we celebrate youth
and competition and excellence.
We remember the joy of how
it feels to run and jump unencumbered
by fear of failure.
It is a time to see in others
the best of what we are
the goodness of what can be
the magnificence of dreams fulfilled.

Once every four years
we set aside our differences
to reflect on life.
It is a time to measure our
progress as old records yield
to new ones.
We track new measures of strength
and speed, and beauty.
It is a time to see in others
that hope is still alive
that effort brings results
that spirits know how to soar.

Once every four years
we celebrate the good that
we can do.  It is a time we dare
not let pass lightly.
For we are not alone.
It is a time to see
in every athlete a thousand
more in need.
It is a time to see obligations
to those who cannot compete;
the promises we have yet to meet;
the good that's left to do.
It is a time to see our past, our
present and our future and
the glory of what still could be.

A wonderful tribute. I watch the games and wish I could do some of those magnificient things.

I love the sport, competition and camaraderie. I don't like the pitting of nations against nations as though there were some kind of a war where nations spend tremendous amounts of money and groom athletes as though they were soldiers for the cause. The money has become so important that the athletes are actually professionals and not drawn from other professions anymore. I miss the idea of amateur athletes.
