Nearby Roads

I live in the country and have to commute 60 miles every day to work. Every day I pass roads that I have never gone down but have always held a curiosity over. This is an ode to such roads.

Nearby Roads

There are roads nearby
That I never have travelled
I've seen them as I drive by
Wet and strewn with gravel
I tell myself there'll be a day
Where I will take the time
And see what's on their way
But it is forever delayed
And I never make the turn
And I continue as I always do
And these roads I do spurn
What's on them I've no clue

These roads always beckon
They call me in a quiet voice
They’re begging me to reckon
And make them my choice
But I always have a routine
That vouches for priority
Leaving the roads unseen
And forever in minority
I forsake making the turn
Staying to the beaten path
And never coming to learn
What surprises the road hath

Yet something inside of me
Tells me that I should explore
That these roads of mystery
Would be places I'd adore
And that what sits upon them
Will reveal something unknown
A secret unbeknownst special gem
Will come out and be shown
And my life would take a turn
As a new road is opened up
Leaving nothing for me to yearn
As new fates upon me erupts

I love this! I can really relate to it, and I suppose I always question those other roads less travelled and love the idea of the adventure they hold. Wonderful poem, a keeper for sure.

The alternative routes with their invitations and allure, "A secret unbeknownst special gem..." ...you deliver this with gentleness and true feeling.

Listen to that "something inside." Take the road that calls to you most clearly. Show up late for work or don't go in at all. Call in and let them know something personal came up - the "you" of your day deserves its time, its turn. Explore the road, the day, yourself - imagine the treasures waiting just beneath the routine.
