Originally I intended to include this poem in "Bible Wisdom for Modern Times: Selections from the Orthodox Old Testament", for it is of course a translation of Jesus Ben Sirach's famous alphabetically acrostic poem, found at Sirach 51: 13-22 in the so-called "Septuagint" or ancient Greek version of the Old Testament. However, when it came time to include the poem, I couldn't find it! Lost in cyberspace? Not exactly, I had simply misfiled it in the wrong directory. So here, belatedly, it is!

Acrostic Wisdom

At a time when I was still young—

Before I set out on the travels of life—

Courting Wisdom was my chief

Desire. I sought her openly in prayer.

Entering the temple, I asked for her, day in, day out.

From first to last, I will continue to seek her company.

Grape blossoms have flowered and their fruit

Has ripened, yet still my heart delights

In her. I have no need of wine to bring me

Joy, for my pleasure lies in Wisdom’s innermost being.

Keenly have I prepared myself to enter her service. My

Love for her knows no bounds.

My spirit rejoices in her sweet presence.

Not for me are either the cares

Or pastimes of ignorant men who

Parade their limited knowledge as “wisdom”,

Quite content to revel in their own foolishness.

Rather will I refresh my mind and

Soul by finding relief for all burdens at Wisdom’s

True fountain of secret treasures. Yes, I will

Uphold and honor Wisdom all my days, for that

Virtue of veneration brings the richest reward

I see a modern melding of the Psalms and Proverbs here. Some Psalms were acrostics and Proverbs urged seeking of Wisdom. Its' a relevant message for our times.

So true. We seek for wisdom on top of mountains, in the stars, and in tea leaves, when wisdom is all around us and in us. We meditate, cogitate, extrapolate wondrous ideologies while the simple truth is in us all the time. In an imperfect world, we distract ourselves too much. Good one, John :-)
