Remembering a True Friend

You did not judge me

or laugh when I failed.

You listened.

When I rambled on

about how hard and

and how low

You Listened.

When others pretended

not to notice

my sadness.

You were there.

When I needed someone

somehow you knew and

You were there.

So when you grew old

and tired and frail

I held you.

For there was nothing else I could do.

And when you died

I whispered

I love you.

For there was nothing else I could say.

I still hear

Your soft voice.

Kind, comforting.

You gave so much

and asked for nothing

in return.

I did my best for you

However, I hope I

was as good a friend

to you.

As you always were

to me.

William,
This poem has such a sad tone. It reminds me, though, of how lucky we are if we have someone like the person you describe. Hugs,
Sheila
