Nothing is Free Anymore

Nothing is Free Anymore

This is an era of “make a buck anyway you can”
Nothing is free anymore, not water, not your windshield cleaned
Not your tires filled with air, not your oil checked,
Not maps along vacation  travel routes
Nothing is free anymore.

If a buck can be made, it will be made.
Everything comes with a monetary price
And where cotton was once considered KING
Now MONEY has long since taken its place.
And nothing is free anymore.

Those who can’t sell something honestly
Resort to selling drugs, scamming innocent folks
Robbing, stealing, and taking what isn’t theirs
Always looking for something for nothing
Because nothing is free anymore.

Honest folks sell themselves,
Their energies, their abilities, their skills and effort
In the workplace to earn a needed salary
Their lives and livelihood dependent upon job
The honest way to survive because nothing is free anymore.

Thank God I was born during a time
When human compassion took precedent over all
When money was a livelihood, not a God
And people cared enough for others
That they wanted to give of themselves freely…
Until the era where nothing is free anymore.

You convey this message gracefully. Nothing is free
and the paradox is that even help is not for free.
It's all part of a culture though and people were so enthusiastic,
they thought it meant individualism, freedom, progress.
In the end, it's just loneliness, despair and growing poverty,
while only a few have a lot more than what they need.

You have said it all with this timely straight to the point write. Times and circumstances have changed so much through the years. I remember going to the gas station when I was young with my mom. They'd check the oil, tires, pump gas, and wash the windshiled free. It was a great time to live! Too much value is placed on the dollar , which unfortunately does not go very far in todays world... A good thinking write!....M

Jeanette,
I can't argue with this wise insight. People/businesses got stingy and greedy. Sad. A great read:)

Oh Jeanette, how I can relate to your work. Yes for many God has been replaced by "Dollar" and that is really such a shame....

Be always safe,

You show us the ills of our society and now free health care that will be paid for by future generations for nothing is free.

Jeanette,

The cliche, "money is the root of all evil", is so, so true. Things are a bit different today, especially with people wanting "instant gratification" and will do anything to get it. Great write.

And Jeanette, it's no different here in Italy....we even pay anywhere between a euro and two when we sit at a table per person to have dinner at a restaurant. And free water........no way! Excellent write about the sign of the times!
