This is a spontaneous poem that I wrote on the back of some work papers while waiting at an unlawful checkpoint in Tuzla, Bosnia. If this short poem moves you, please add a comment.

Thanks, Mike Monahan

Why do I see such sorrow in the child's eye
Why do the mines still make them die
Why are they legless and use a crutch
Why doesn't the world care that much
Why can't children get a decent meal
Why can't the world see what I feel
Why do the monsters still run the show
Why can't the hatred just be let go
Why is the holocaust I've seen with my eyes
ignored by the world in blameless sighs
Why do I find many more mass graves
than cute little children find happy days
Back at home in New York State
I never worried about Bosnia's fate
I was once obsessed with vanity
now Bosnia is stealing my sanity
Strong people survive from year to year
but they don't fool me I smell their fear
Why are the schools riddled with bullet holes
Why do I one knows
Why are the hamlets and villages burned
Why are all the cars and buses overturned
Why are the harmless cows strung up and hung
I can't figure out what they have done
Why are farm animals killed and impaled
Hell, this godamn society has failed
Why is the hatred so severe the end so near
This is Bosnia as seen through my eyes
This is why Bosnia forever cries.

this is a vey moving poem. And, we care for we are human and it is sad for a child to see such horror, but it seems to be everywhere, and there are so many people who seem not to care or not get involved. Sad, but true.

have a friend whom is very affected by the Holocaust and was serving in Viet nam and was spit on when he came home to Brooklyn NY at the airport and is now doing his best to live a life of freedom and without fear and to touch young people mosstly but so sincere and truthful about everything. There are good people in this world, but war has destroyed lots of them too. So many young ones getting killed before their time, doing duty to their country. It is so Sad. Will preace ever come? I can only pray and hope so.

That's quite the tale, Mike. It's pretty obvious that this one came just bubbling up. Lots of emotions here, so I hope you will write more poetry. I can see how you must feel comfortable in this 'genre' if that's what one can call it. Beneath all those cop layers seems to hide a fine poetrical wordsmith, so break out of your shell, Buddy and lay it on thick.

Mike, it's tragic that things like a senseless war- or ethnic cleansing, such as what happened in Bosnia can be forgotten almost as quickly as removing troops after the war is over. People like yourself carry memories and questions buried inside begging for answers that a leaderless world cannot address. Eventually it's possible we will find leaders who are less eager to war and more anxious to deal with answeers inside the countries they pretend to lead. That is not to say we need to ignore threats from zealots and terrorists. Will we ever grow into a single humanity whose first concern is the safety of its children? Your poem echoes loudly with what should the right questions. I think a lot of us hear you.

Very moving. You care and you don't know why? You care because you are human with a heart, a big heart. I find the fact that the monster of Bosnia is or was a psychiatrist. I've digressed. Excellent write with details that bring your feelings out starkly. Liz

Your poem made me "feel" your pain in my heart. (These words ("feel" your pain in my heart) are not mine but they say what I mean. Happy writing. Linda

Your words personify all that continuously occurs. Maybe one day mankind will learn to show and share kindness instead of focusing on hatred....

The scene will be repeated lover and over until we tolerate hatred no more. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Mike, this is so powerful! Seen through the eyes of those who experience a situation can make changes in the world.
Knew you were a great author, now a great poet? Allright!
