This dreamy smooth jazz piano ballad from my 2010 solo keyboard CD called 'Unrequited' memorializes and laments the tragedy of a favorite mother bird (an Osprey) viewed in my wilderness neighborhood during 2008-2009 as she nested, dedicated all her strength and time to raising her young chick, and then in June 2009 suffered the tragedy of losing it all (her nest and chick) in one violent summer thunderstorm which blew down her tree and nest and crushed her young birdling. I truly witnessed this and saw that this mother grieved her predictament. She soon left the area never to nest their again...

FOR A FALLEN BIRD - Free mp3

This CD "Unrequited" was recorded on June 16-17, 2009 in some intense, long sessions. Around that time here in Florida, we had some severe thunderstorms. I'd been watching an Osprey nest in my area for a few years and on a break outside I noticed her nest was hit hard by the wind in a big thunderstorm. Her tree fell and the chick that was in there must've died. I know I saw her sitting around in the other trees for a few days, looking at the ground. And I clearly knew the bare tree I had watched for over a year was down on the ground. The mother Osprey really seemed to be grieving. Then in a week or so she left for good and has not been back since. I know she will never nest again in that spot and I'm sure she lost her chick for the second year in a row. (Her first nest also fell in 2008!) Very bad luck for her and proof that FL's early summer thunderstorms are the worst.
Yes, I believe animals feel basic human emotions like grief, loss and that they know the difference between winning out and losing against man and Nature.
So this tune is dedicated to that mother Osprey wherever she is...

More great Nature/Ocean music and piano solo playing from Michael Guy: Jazz/New Age pianist for over 33 years!

Michael, I have been listening to your music, and it is very meaningful, often haunted by waves of sorrow ~
I think it is beautiful ~ and the dedication you wrote of the mother Osprey is an image I hold now, very eternal.
Blessings,
Christine

I believe that as well. And I am often in awe of the osprey I observe in the northwood. Your Ode to a Fallen Bird is wonderful.

that is so sad about the osprey, and for you to observe it too...we had a wicked spring storm here this year also - so much hail fell it killed a newborn fawn - the neighbor found it the next morning...the mother doe hung around for days...I agree for those humans that take the time to observe wildlife, the nature world will reflect emotions of all kinds...

Michael,

You've captured the spirit of the Osprey in beautiful, compassionate music - well done.
