Army of the Dead

A variation from my latest book, MYSTERIOUS TRAILS OF AMERICAN FOLKLORE

A couple had moved to Charleston
Not long after the Civil War
Simply looking to live in peace
They got more than they bargained for

Come midnight the wife would wake up
To rumbling of wheels passing by
Yet they lived on a dead end street
There was no explanation why

Her husband never let her look
"Don't look out the window!" he'd groan
"There's nothing there for you to see
Simply leave well enough alone"

Soon she asked a new friend she'd met
And this is what the woman said...
"They are southern soldiers who died
They're called the 'Army of the Dead'

"They all died in a hospital
The war ended, they didn't know
Each night they rise up from their graves
Off to reinforce Lee they go"

The next night she slipped from her bed
To watch the dead soldiers march by
Felt the pain they carried with them
As they passed right before her eyes

Cannon, wagons and foot soldiers
Within the fog shrouded in gray
Even the blast of a bugle
It's claimed folks still see them today

Eerie stuff. Maybe Steven Spielberg could use it for a movie. Patrick

A good write about a somber subject. Can we even imagine the aftermath of pain during that war. I think not, for there was little they could do for the wounded. Yes, scars are still felt today...

In the mist of the morning, it's easy to pick out what's on your mind. But you're seeing what you saw, through its eyes. Opens up the way for a mystery novel.

“Mine eyes have seen the glory… and the truth goes marching on.”
